SANNAT LIONS -0- NADUR YOUNGSTERS -1-
Gozo Stadium 30.09.07
Nadur Youngsters joined Victoria Hotspurs on top of Division 1 with their second win from as many matches. It was a deserved victory as Nadur had the best chances and Sannat Lions should be grateful not to have conceded more goals. Nadur dominated the first half should have increased not only increased their lead, but close the match completely. On the other hand, Nadur could have paid dearly for the missed chances as Sannat came dangerously back in the last part of the match. Nadur were without Saviour Attard, Marcos Rogerio Secco, (injured), Frank Paul Azzopardi (suspended) and Charles Hili out of the country), but still managed to give a good account of themselves against a well organised Sannat Lions team.
The reigning Champions, came out looking for an early goal to settle their nerves, and managed to get it on the 6th minute. From a C. Camilleri’s corner, the Lions defence found it difficult to clear the ball, and Chidi Eric Nwankwo was prompt to finish with a low shot. Soon after, Nwankwo‘s cross was met by J. M. Portelli’s header, but the ball was cleared in time by the Lions defence. Nadur were administering with easy, attacking from all sides and missing their last set piece. Sannat had a C. de Oliviera’s free kick which caused no concern to the youngsters defence. J. M. Portelli beat his marker, passed the ball to J. Buttigieg who flicked it into the patch of Nwankwo who controlled the ball superbly only to see his shot well saved by D. Bajada. Shaun Muscat, who had a very good match for the Youngsters, passed the ball to Nwankwo whose first times was blocked by Debono, and C. Camilleri’s try from the rebound went just over the bar. Sannat had a long range effort by M. Cutajar ending well off the target. The Champions went close to increase their first when Bajada saved a nice try by Nwankwo and later the same goalkeeper save a J. Buttigieg close range header and again was well placed to save the deny Nwankwo from the rebound. In the dying seconds of the first half, a header by F. de Andrade, following a corner by J. Vella, was saved one handed by Xuereb. Nadur’s captain, A. Portelli, should have increased the Youngsters lead when he concluded softly a cross by Nwankwo.
The second half started on the same pattern of the first, with Nadur dictating and Sannat defends. A C. Camilleri’s free kick was saved by Bajada with the help of the post and M. Formosa was on the fatal line to clear. The Sannat custodian proved his worth when he saved with great difficulty a shot by J. M. Portelli. Sannat started to get more into the picture, and missed their best scoring opportunity when an inviting cross by De Andrade from the right was completely missed by M. Formosa. De Andrade tried his luck from the edge of the Youngsters area, only to see his shot ending just over the post. The Nadur forwards were being caught in an offside position many times, and their counter attack was failing to get underway. M. Formosa’s try ended just over and a good shot by C. Camilleri was cleared into a corner by J. Vella. The final whistle of referee, Saviour Tanti, found the Champions leading with that early goal and thus sharing first spot with Victoria Hotspurs.
