QALA St. JOSEPH -1- NADUR YOUNGSTERS -3-
Good Performance – Great Result
19.02.09 Gozo Stadium
Finally we have seen the real character of Nadur Youngsters. We saw the team playing with enthusiasm, with composure and really everyone gave everything in this match, a match that they all seemed to realise the importance of it. Against Qala St. Joseph, the Whites knew they had to win to move away from bottom place. We always believed that this position was not the right position for our team and we really hope this will give us the push we needed. As for the match itself, it had patches of good football and others of tennis like footballas both defences were trying to get the ball behind the midfield section, with few dangers to the goalkeepers.
Nadur had a good opening when a M. Portelli cross was well intercepted by Agius before it could create danger. The same Portelli had a shot again saved by the Maroons custodian. Nadur kept insisting and B. Brajovic saw his attempt well saved by Agius. On the 12th minute Nadur opened the score. J. Buttigieg had a solo run from the left and his cross was perfectly met by Shaun Muscat, who had no difficulty beating the helpless Agius. Qala tried to get more into the match but a free kick taken by R. Saverino was cleared by the Youngsters defence. Another free kick for Qala on the 18th minute, this time taken by Mario Mifsud, deceived S. Sultana and ended into the back of the net for the equaliser. Nadur were not surprised and continued pushing forward. A. Portelli saw his header, following a free kick by A. Simoncic, hitting the crossbar. Soon after another good try by B. Brajovic, was again well saved by Agius. With Nadur pushing all out to regain the lead, it was Qala who had the chance of goal. C. E. Nwankwo beat his marker and placed his shot towards goal with S. Sultana making a good reflex save. The half time whistle found the teams sharing 2 goals. The second half started much like the first, but with Nadur more determined. On the 49th minute the ex Nadur Youngsters defender, M. R. Secco handled the ball in the area leaving the referee no option but to point to the penalty spot and showing him the yellow card. The Youngsters striker, Bojan Brajovic, easily placed the ball out of reach of Agius to give a deserved lead to the Whites. Nadur were now in control and the Maroons only went close to equalise with a lob by Nwankwo, following a cross by Saverino that ended high over the bar. The Youngsters player/coach, A. Simoncic saw his well taken free kick ending just wide but it was his perfect cross that practically killed of the match. His cross from the right flank was powerfully headed into goal by the Youngsters Captain, Anthony Portelli. Qala were now demoralized and never really bothered the Youngsters defence until the final whistle. With this result, Nadur can now breathe fresh air and can look forward for better results to get out of relegation problems. it was a good performance by the Youngsters and a great result that left the Whites followers in very good mood.
