S. K. Victoria Wanderers -0- Nadur Youngsters -0-
14.03.09 Gozo Stadium
Nadur Youngsters and S. K. Victoria Wanderers figured in another goalless draw, the third time this season. After 270 minutes neither side managed to find the way to goal. The match was played with both sides trying to avoid defeat more then trying to win the match. Much more was expected, keeping in mind the importance of the points at stake. Nadur are still very much involved in the relegation zone, while the Citizens miss the chance to reduce the gap in League Leaders, Sannat Lions.
Nadur started on the attack but failed to create any real danger to Mercieca in the Wanderers goal. A. Portelli had a try that ended high and a Brajovic cross found no one to continue the action. The Citizens were unlucky when a free kick by J. Vella was headed towards goal but S. Sultana was there to save his side. Sultana was again called into action when he blocked A. Adesina’s attempt from close range. During this good patch for the Wanderers, M. Buttigieg missed the ball when he tried to head a corner by Vella. The Youngsters defence was under pressure but A. Adesina, receiving from I. Adesina, hesitated a bit too much and the danger was cleared by Sultana with the help of B. Timotic. Nadur had a counter attack and M. Portelli’s lob was well saved by Mercieca. A free kick by I. Adesina was saved with some difficulty by Sultana. A. Portelli went close for Nadur but his fine well taken angled shot missed the crossbar. Just before the half time whistle I. Adesina should have done better after a solo action, but his try was weak and Sultana cleared his line. Nadur opened the second half in attacking form. A free kick by A. Simoncic was saved with difficulty by Mercieca. A. Simoncic turned provider but his cross towards B. Brajovic was well intercepted by Mercieca. On the other side, a J. Vella shot from outside the area ended well over the bar. Nadur kept insisting and J. Buttigieg cross found A. Portelli unmarked in the area only for the latter to hit wide. A. Adesina had a desperate shot ending wide from a very favourable position. Nadur went close again, this time when a shot by J. Buttigieg ended just wide. L. Dimech had the ball in the net for the Wanderers but the goal was disallowed for a foul on Sultana by I. Adesina. J. Buttigieg entered the area and was brought down in the area but the referee was close and waved play on. A. Portelli headed wide following a cross by S. Muscat and soon after, from a corner by Simoncic, the Wanderers defence cleared with difficulty. S. Sultana had to save a difficult try from I. Adesina. Near the end, Nadur Youngsters gave Joseph Muscat his first team debut. There was no more real danger action and the match ended with a boring score line that satisfy no one. Referee: Mario Apap Nadur Youngsters Formation: Steve Sultana; Jeffrey Meilak; Mario Portelli; Peter Buttigieg; Aleksandar Simoncic; Branislav Timotic; Josef Buttigieg; Saviour Attard; Shaun Muscat; Anthony Portelli (Joseph Muscat); Bojan Brajovic. |
