An own goal nine minutes from time denied Malta a positive result as Sweden maintained the challenge for a place in next year's FIFA World Cup in South Africa with a narrow 1-0 win. Swedish coach Lars Lagerback maintained faith in the same set of players which obtained the dramatic 2-1 win over Hungary in Budapest last Saturday, making no changes. John Buttigieg, on the other hand, made four changes from the team which lost to Cape Verde as he replaced Ryan Fenech, Roderick Briffa, Clayton Failla and Andre Schembri with Shaun Bajada, Alex Muscat, Ian Azzopardi and Gilbert Agius. With Andrew Hogg confirmed in goal, Manny Muscat and Ian Azzopardi were employed as defneders on the two flanks with Brian Said and Kenneth Scicluna taking the role of central defenders. Gilbert Agius played in front of the defenders, with the other four midfielders being Alex Muscat and Shaun Bajada on the flanks, Jamie Pace and Anrew Cohen in the middle. Michael Mifsud was once again the only striker. After that Sweden had a long-distance freekick by Kim Kallstrom ending off target, Malta created a good goal scoring opportunity on 13 minutes with Jamie Pace exchanging the ball with Michael Mifsud before the fast Malta striker tested Andreas Isaksson with an angled shot from the right. Two minutes later, Pace once again released Mifsud but Olof Mellberg managed to stop the latter on the edge of the area. On the other side of the pitch, Zlatan Ibrahimovic's diagonal shot from the left ended just wide on 16 minutes. Sweden created a good opportunity on 71 minutes with Hysen serving Johan Elmander on the edge of the area with the latter's powerful drive ending just wide. With the visitors increasing the pressure on the locals, the Maltese could only counter-attack and on 72 minutes, Michael Mifsud went close as he concluded a good run with a fine shot which ended just over the bar. Gilbert Agius then released Clayton Failla on the left and the latter's effort was saved in two attempts by Isaksson. Nine minutes from time, Sweden notched the winner when off a throw-in from the left by Rasmus Elm, the ball reached Marcus Berg whose shot was deflected by Ian Azzopardi past goalkeeper Hogg with the ball ending at the back of the net.
