- by Saviour Attard Both Nadur Youngsters and Għajnsielem F.C. know that this Sunday’s clash at 2 p.m. at the Gozo Stadium will have a huge effect on the remaining hopes of reaching league leaders Victoria Hotpsurs. Only a win can re-launch the Whites for the following match against Vicotria a week after.
Cup Defeat
Nadur lost the Freedom Cup final last Wednesday against the same Victoria Hotspurs. It was a loss that meant that Nadur’s only chance of silverware this year is in winning the Title. This task seemed more impossible to achieve few weeks ago as Hotspurs had seemingly established an unassailable advantage of points.
But the whites can still do it with three matches left for the end but no more slip ups are allowed from next Sunday onwards.
Last Gasp Win for the Blacks
After going down to Xewkija Tigers 2-0, Għajnsielem bounced back to a 3-2 victory over S.K.V.W, with the winning goal scored in the dying minutes of the match. This win certainly stimulated all Għajnsielem’s players for the match against Nadur and they will have a full squad available.
Mercieca Out
Charles Mercieca will miss this match due to suspension. The central defender’s absence hinders a lot Nadur’s defensive back up but the players know that stakes are up high and the match is of great importance. Nadur won the opening fixture against the blacks 4-3 and eliminated them from the Independence Cup with a 3-0 demolition earlier in the season. However, Għajnsielem won their last encounter with the Whites 2-1, after coming from behind.
