Melita First Division League - Match 2

Ghajnsielem - 3 vs Nadur Youngsters FC - 4

vsGhajnsielem_11-12Nadur Youngsters are co-leaders of the Melita Division I championship at the end of the second day of matches following their fine win over Ghajnsielem.  The two sides were motivated to seek the full points at stake as Nadur were coming from an unimpressive performance in their win over Sannat Lions while Ghajnsielem are still after their first positive result this season.  At the end Nadur and Ghajnsielem produced a good match with several scoring opportunities and with the result that turned from one side to another.  Nadur’s skipper Anthony Portelli ended the protagonist of the match by scoring two goals that demoralised the Blacks.

Ghajnsielem seemed in a better shape during the early stages and were also unlucky not to score an early goal.  In the second minute of play Nadur’s Brian Meilak headed off the fatal line a free kick by Simoncic and the same Simoncic had another attempt four minutes later that was stopped by the crossbar.  In the 9th minute Ghajnsielem’s Jason Portelli had a good shot that was deflected in corner and Nadur replied three minutes later through a free kick by Josef Buttigieg that was saved in corner by goalie Joseph Grech.  Nadur gained confidence and in the 14th minute alow shgot by Milos Stojanovic ended just wide.  Nadur opened the score three minutes later through a low drive by Josef Buttigieg who concluded a good pass by Anthony Portelli.  On 21 minutes Nadur could have doubled the score but a strike by Milos Stojanovic hit the crossbar.  Ghajsnielem recovered from the difficult moments and produced a good reaction that earned them the equaliser in the 25th minute through a shot by Jason Portelli. Pay became more interesting with the two sides pushing forward in an attempt to taske the lead.  On 43 mintes Nadur’s goalie Victor Agius cleared short a corner kick by Alex Simoncic and from the loose ball Rivellino Petriaggi concluded wide.  However, in the first minute of stoppage time before the break Ghajsnielem’s Rivellino Petriaggi produced a personal action in Nadur’s territory, dribbled two defenders and the goalkeeper before depositing the ball in goal to put the Blacks in the lead.

Nadur were not demoralised and came out very aggressive for the restart.  The levelled the score after just three minutes of play into the second period through Milos Stojanovic who converted in goal a loose ball following an intervention by the defense.  On 53 minutes the Youngsters regained the lead.  Joseph Grima released Anthony Portelli in the area and the latter concluded in the corner with a low drive.  The Blacks continued to suffer pressure and ten minutes later Anthony Portelli made it 4-2 for Nadur after exchanging the ball with Josef Buttigieg.  Ghajnsielem’s reply arrived on 79 minutes through a header by Simoncic that ended just wide but Nadur went again close to scoring on 85 minutes through an effort by Josef Buttigieg that ended over the crossbar.  The Youngsters were also unlucky in the first minute of stoppage time when Anthony Portelli was denied from obtaining a hat- trick by the post.  Ghajnsielem managed to make the final score more respectable with a third goal that arrived in the sixth minute of stoppage time through Jason Portelli who concluded in goal a melee at Nadur’s area.  However, it was too little too late as there was no time left for the Blacks to save the result.
