GFA Quarter Final

Xewkija Tigers - 4 vs Nadur Youngsters FC - 1

vsXewkijaCup11-12Xewkija Tigers scored three second half goals when they had an extra player on the field of play to make sure of a place with the last four teams to contest the current edition of the BOV GFA Cup. The match was considered as the most attractive of the quarter final stage as it was a clash between holders Nadur and current championship leaders Xewkija. At the end the match produced an entertaining first period but was dominated by Xewkija after the break when Nadur were reduced to ten players.

The Tigers had an excellent start and opened the score in the second minute of play when they were awarded a penalty for a foul by Paul Camilleri on Rodney Buttigieg and converted by John Camilleri. Nadur replied in the fifth minute through an effort by Milos Stojanovic that ended wide and on 14 minutes Xewkija were dangerous through a shot on the run by John Camilleri that was blocked in corner. In the 19th minute Nadur once again went close to scoring but Milos Stojanovic's header form a cross by Claudio Antunes ended wide. However, the Youngsters levelled the score one minute later through a header by Charles Mercieca from a corner kick by Milos Stojanovic. Nadur kept insisting and two minutes after the half hour mark Josef Buttigieg could have turned the result in their favour but his low drive following a personal action ended wide.

Nadur practically compromised their chances to defend the hour in the third minute of play of the second period when Saviour Attard left his side with a player less on the field as he was sent off for a foul on John Camilleri. Two minutes later Nadur's goalie Victor Agius made a difficult save to block a cross by Elton Vella and Nadur replied through a shot by Josef Buttigieg that ended wide. On 53 minutes John Camilleri header wide a good cross by Rodney Buttigieg and the same striker lobbed wide three minutes later as goalie Agius went out of his position in an attempt to block the danger. On 61 minutes Mark Camilleri hesitated to conclude as he was released in Nadur's area by Rodney Buttigeig. Xewkija's efforts left the desired dividends three minutes later when John Camilleri netted with a low drive after receiving from Mark Camilleri following a cross by Frank Lee Galea. One minute later Xewkija could have added another goal but John Camilleri's attempt was well saved by goalie Victor Agius. Xewkija lost another good chance to score another goal on 76 minutes when Chris Camilleri, who came in as a substitute, concluded wide from a good position a good cross by Rodney Buttigieg. However, on 78 minutes Mark Camilleri made it 3-1 for Xewkija with a low shot after receiving from John Camilleri. The Tigers sealed the issue with a fourth goal that arrived four minutes from time through Chris Camilleri's low drive following a long through pass by Elton Vella.
